It might not be Friday but that won't stop me from spinning something far out, but first a little back story on this album.
On Facebook I am part of the coolest music community ever. Every year they do a secret Santa swap For my second year doing the swap, this was one of the albums I received.
This genre is labeled, Krautrock. What is it you ask? Well this genre is a German genre that focuses on psychedelic rock and the counter culture movement that was gathering steam. Krautrock can also encapsulate kosmische (cosmic music), which involved early synthesizers and hypnotic rhythms.
Where does this album come into play?
Well in 1970, Armageddon, released their only album. The guitar on this album is Hendrixesque and the music alternates between straight psychedelic to kosmische to a little bit of blues. After my first listen, it reminded me a lot of the early Grateful Dead and a little bit of Ultimate Spinach. My second listen just blew my mind and put me in an out of this world head space. Totally far out, even by my standards.
Frank Diez is simply incredible. One of those rare talents that definitely needs a second look. Some of his shredding is on par with other greats of his generation. But as many single album acts of the time, they only became popular long after. The lack of success at the time caused the band to break up and go their own ways.
As I always say though, give it a listen and tell me what you think!
