The Beatles dabble in psychedelic rock? Yup..
This album was inspired by their first experiences with psychedelics (mainly LSD). The success would bring about two more albums of the same style, Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers. Some might say this album along with Pet Sounds, were the first of it's kind. The album also has elements of acid rock and raga rock.
The acid rock elements come from the song, I'm Only Sleeping, where it's described as an acid influenced dream sequence that features George Harrison playing his Gibson SG with a fuzz box.
Love You Too, features a return of the sitar that was originally used by the group for the song, Norwegian Wood, on the previous album, Yesterday and Today. The Asian Music Circle play the traditional Indian musical instruments.
Here, There and Everywhere, was a direct response to Brian Wilson of, The Beach Boys song, God Only Knows. Ironically enough, that song was inspired by the Beatles album, Rubber Soul.
Tomorrow Never Knows, probably the most experimental song by the group to this point, featured reversed guitars and looped tape effects. This song was heavily influenced by the usage of LSD and Timothy Leary's book, The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on The Tibetan Book of the Dead.
Overall, it's one heck of album and worth a listen or two.
