Who created psychedelic rock? That's a question I've been asked a few times since I post about the genre a bit.
I'd go with these guys from Texas; the 13th Floor Elevators. Led by front man Roky Erickson, this group catapulted themselves into the mainstream music scene in 1966 with their self titled debut. This album was their sophomore effort and it does not disappoint.
This album leads off with, Slip Inside this House, which is the band's own psychedelic twist. This warms up the listeners to a cover of Bob Dylan's, It's All Over, Baby Blue. This cover is phenomenal but it's also done with a psychedelic styling that melts the listener's mind in the best possible way.
Another great song which became one of their better known songs, Levitation, that features guitarist Tommy Hall on the electric jug. It's one of those songs of the 60s that still holds up today in terms of high quality technical instrument improvisation.
The album features so many amazing elements of psychedelic rock; fuzzed out guitars, phasing effects, and other great sound effects.
Definitely a must listen for any fan of 60s rock and roll.
