Some said they were done, they couldn’t come back from the tragedy that had befallen the band. The death of Cliff Burton was a devastating blow to one of the best metal bands of the 80s.
In comes Jason Newsted, a guitarist with incredible shoes to fill. Coming from the band, Flotsam and Jetsam where he just released an album, Doomsday for the Deciever. After interviewing over 50 bassists, including Les Claypool, Greg Christian, and Mike Jastremski, Newsted was the last to audition. After obtaining the band’s setlist for their upcoming shows ahead of time, he learned all the material and the job was his.
The album was released later than expected due to touring commitments and James Hetfield’s injured himself skateboarding. But when it was released it received critical acclaim by reviewers and fans alike.
My favorite song on the album, One, is hands down one of their best songs. Heck, even Lars plays the drums halfway decent. It also features one hell of a guitar solo. The song also won the first Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 1990. Another first was, it was the band’s first music video.
Cover to cover this album truly doesn’t have a bad album in it. It is also one of my favorite albums by the band.
